What Is Metabolic Age?
Metabolic age compares your Basal Metabolic Rate – the energy your body burns at complete rest – against typical BMR values for people of different ages. If your BMR is higher than the average for your actual age, your metabolic age comes out lower (younger); if it’s lower than average, your metabolic age comes out higher (older).
It is a popularised wellness concept, not a recognised clinical or diagnostic measurement. There is no single agreed scientific method for calculating it, and different tools (including body-fat scales) can produce different results because they use different reference data and formulas.

How Is BMR Calculated?
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation, a widely used BMR estimation equation for the general population and commonly used in clinical and sports-nutrition settings:

How Is the Comparison Age Range Built?
To estimate a metabolic age, your BMR is compared against a reference curve of typical BMR values at seven age bands from 18-24 through to 75-90. These reference values are calculated using the same Mifflin-St Jeor formula, applied to illustrative average UK adult height and weight figures for each age band. This reference curve is a simplified, illustrative model – it is not drawn from an official clinical dataset or a named GOV.UK or NHS survey, and it does not account for your individual muscle mass, activity level or genetics, all of which affect BMR far more precisely than age alone. The seven ages used to anchor the curve (22, 29.5, 39.5, 49.5, 59.5, 69.5 and 82) are representative midpoint ages for each age band, not exact population statistics for those specific ages.
What Affects Your Metabolic Age Result?
- Muscle mass: Muscle burns more calories at rest than fat, so more muscular people tend to have a higher BMR and a lower metabolic age on this comparison.
- Body weight: Because the underlying formula is weight-based, higher body weight generally increases BMR, which can lower your metabolic age even without extra muscle – this is a known limitation of weight-based BMR formulas.
- Age: BMR naturally tends to decline with age, largely due to gradual loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) unless it’s actively countered with resistance training.
- Sex: Men typically have a higher BMR than women of the same age, height and weight, mainly due to differences in average body composition.

Since this comparison is BMR-based, anything that increases your BMR relative to your reference group can lower your metabolic age figure:

Does losing weight always lower metabolic age?
Not necessarily. Because this comparison is BMR-based and BMR is partly driven by total body weight, losing weight can sometimes raise your calculated metabolic age even if body composition (the ratio of muscle to fat) has improved. This is a known limitation of weight-based BMR comparisons rather than a reflection of your actual health.
