Fee Breakdown

How This Calculator Works: Final value fees are calculated on the total sale amount (item price plus postage charged to the buyer). Business sellers pay a category-based percentage, a fixed per-order fee, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, and 20% VAT on top of eBay’s fees. Private UK sellers currently pay no selling fees on most eligible domestic sales. Do Private Sellers Pay eBay Fees?

UK-based private sellers currently pay no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee on most eligible domestic sales. Instead, eBay charges the buyer a separate Buyer Protection Fee, which does not come out of your payout. Fees can still apply to private sellers if you list more than 300 items in a month, add optional paid listing upgrades, or deliver an item overseas (a flat overseas fee applies). Selling vehicles is also excluded from free private selling.

How Are Business Seller Fees Calculated?

Business sellers pay a final value fee calculated as a percentage of the total sale amount — the item price plus whatever you charge the buyer for postage. The percentage varies by item category, typically falling somewhere between around 7% and 15% depending on what you sell.

FeeTypical Rate (business sellers, ex VAT)Notes
Final Value Fee~7% – 15% of total sale amountVaries by item category

How to Use This Calculator

  1. Choose your seller type – Private or Business.
  2. Select the buyer’s location – UK, Europe, US/Canada, or Rest of World, since international sales can carry an extra fee.
  3. Enter your item price and the postage you charge the buyer – eBay calculates most fees on the combined total.
  4. Business sellers: pick your item category (or enter a custom final value fee rate), tick Top Rated Seller if it applies to your Premium Service listings, and add a Promoted Listings ad rate if you use one.
  5. Confirm whether you’re VAT-registered so the summary reflects whether the VAT on fees is reclaimable.
  6. Click Calculate Fees to see your estimated net proceeds and a full fee breakdown.

What Counts as the “Total Sale Amount”?

eBay calculates most percentage-based fees on the total sale amount, which is the item price plus the postage charged to the buyer (and any applicable taxes collected). This means charging a higher postage fee doesn’t avoid eBay’s cut — the final value fee applies to postage too.

International and Overseas Selling Fees

If you deliver to a buyer outside the UK, an additional fee typically applies on top of the standard final value fee. For business sellers this varies by destination region; for private sellers, who are otherwise fee-free on domestic sales, a flat overseas fee applies instead. Enter the buyer’s location in the calculator to include this.

Top Rated Seller Discount

eBay Top Rated Sellers receive a 10% discount on the variable portion of the final value fee for listings using eBay’s Premium Service — the discount does not apply to the fixed per-order fee. Tick the Top Rated Seller box in the calculator if this applies to you.

VAT on eBay Fees

Business seller fees on eBay.co.uk are shown exclusive of VAT, and eBay adds 20% VAT on top of the final value fee, per-order fee, regulatory operating fee, and any Promoted Listings fee. If you’re VAT-registered, you can normally reclaim this VAT through your VAT return, making it broadly cost-neutral. If you’re not VAT-registered, the VAT is a real additional cost that reduces your net proceeds.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does eBay take from a sale in the UK?

It depends on your seller type. UK-based private sellers currently pay no final value fee or regulatory operating fee on most eligible domestic sales. Business sellers typically pay a final value fee of roughly 7% to 15% of the total sale amount depending on category, plus a small per-order fee, a 0.35% regulatory operating fee, and 20% VAT on those charges.

Do private sellers pay any eBay fees?

UK-based private sellers pay no final value fee and no regulatory operating fee on most domestic sales. Fees can still apply for listing more than 300 items a month, optional paid listing upgrades, overseas delivery, or selling vehicles, which are excluded from free private selling.

Is eBay’s final value fee charged on postage as well as the item price?

Yes. eBay calculates the final value fee on the total sale amount, which includes the item price plus whatever postage you charge the buyer, not just the item price alone.

Does eBay charge VAT on its fees?

Yes, for business sellers. eBay’s published business fees are exclusive of VAT, and 20% VAT is added on top of the final value fee, per-order fee, regulatory operating fee and any Promoted Listings fee. VAT-registered businesses can normally reclaim this VAT through their VAT return.

What is the eBay Regulatory Operating Fee?

It’s a fee introduced to cover eBay’s costs of complying with UK digital services regulation. It applies as a percentage of the total sale amount for business sellers and is charged in addition to the final value fee and per-order fee, plus VAT.

Do I still pay eBay fees if I sell internationally?

Delivering to a buyer outside the UK typically adds an extra fee on top of the standard selling fees. The rate depends on the destination and whether you’re a private or business seller. Domestic UK sales are not affected.

How can I reduce my eBay fees?

Selling as a private individual (where eligible) avoids most fees entirely. Business sellers can look at becoming a Top Rated Seller for a discount on Premium Service listings, choosing categories with lower final value fee rates where relevant, avoiding unnecessary Promoted Listings spend on low-margin items, and reclaiming VAT if registered.
