2024/2025 Tax Year Overview

This calculator uses the latest UK tax bands for the 2024/2025 tax year (6 April 2024 to 5 April 2025). Personal allowance remains at £12,570, with basic rate tax at 20%, higher rate at 40%, and additional rate at 45%. Tax Codes Explained

Tax Code Meaning Allowance
1257L Standard tax code with personal allowance £12,570
BR All income taxed at basic rate (20%) None
0T No personal allowance available £0
M1 Emergency tax code (non-cumulative) Varies

Your tax code appears on your payslip and is determined by HMRC based on your circumstances. The standard 1257L code applies if you have one job, no benefits, and no untaxed income.

National Insurance (NI)

As of January 2024, Class 1 National Insurance for employees is:

  • 0% on earnings up to £12,570 per year
  • 8% on earnings between £12,571 and £50,270 per year
  • 2% on earnings over £50,270 per year

NI was reduced from 10% to 8% in the 2024 Budget, providing relief for most workers earning between £12,570 and £50,270.

Pension Contributions

Most employers offer workplace pension schemes with automatic enrolment. Typical employee contributions range from 5% to 10%, with employers matching or adding extra. Contributions are taken from your gross pay before tax, reducing your taxable income.

Note: This calculator shows gross pension deduction. In reality, workplace pensions use net pay arrangements where contributions reduce taxable income.

Student Loan Repayment Plans

  • Plan 1: Pre-September 2012 students. Repay 9% on income over £22,015 (2024/25)
  • Plan 2: Post-2012 England/Wales students. Repay 9% on income over £27,295 (2024/25)
  • Plan 4: Scottish students. Repay 9% on income over £27,660 (2024/25)
  • Plan 5: New England/Wales students (from 2023). Repay 9% on income over £25,000 (2024/25)

Student loan repayments are calculated on gross income above your plan’s threshold and deducted alongside tax and NI through PAYE.
